Sailors Valentines were brought home to New England by whalers in the 1800's.  Most were made in Barbados, the last port of call before they sailed home.  Many included messages like "REMEMBER ME" or "TO MY SWEETHART"

Having a father in the navy, and a passion for shells, it was only a matter of time, before Jane discovered the art of  making valentines.
Quoting her own words:  "The valentines are tedious, but I find it soothing. I don't sew or embroider....I glue!
